Android Connect

2008-04-02 @ 08:00,

Have you ever wondered how far and wide your smile has reached or how far you have touched someone? Android Connect attempts to answer that question.

Imagine your phone smiling at another phone it comes into contact with and brightens up the day for that phone. That phone now smiles to next phone it comes into contact with; brightening up the day of that new phone. In essence, your phone's smile reached that third phone.

With Android Connect, you will be able track your smile. Find out who you passed your smile directly to and who acquired your smile indirectly from other users. Locations and times will be displayed on a custom Google Map.

To promote the use of Android Connect, our team plans to give prizes to users in possession of what we call a golden coin. The golden coin is similar to a smile except that the golden coin will jump to the new phone. In other words, a cut and paste (golden coin) and not a copy and paste (smile). Holders of the coins at the end of the promotional period is the winner. Consolation prizes will be given to users that hold the coins for the longest period of time. This promotion is subject to the availability of handsets supporting Google's Android platform and resources of the team.

Aside from tracking how far your smile reaches, this service could also be used to model outbreaks of contagious diseases. In fact, one of original names for this project was Infectious Smile. The data collected may be very useful to researchers. Not only will you have fun seeing how far you can infect someone with your smile, but you will help researchers study the spread of contagious diseases.

The handset service currently runs on Google's Android platform. Viewing statistics and mapping is targeted as an add-on application to existing social networks such as but not limited to MySpace and Facebook. Integration to user profiles will enhance user experience as to seeing who they infected.

You may create your own test environment and test the service by registering and installing Android Connect on the Google Android Emulator.

Currently, only signature copy is available (a copy of a signature is held by both users after passing the signature). Signature move (only one signature is passed around) will be available in the near future.

A sample map from our team's testing is viewable in the Sample Signature mapping section.

Thank you for interest in the project.
