First Time on an OC-1

2008-03-30 @ 20:00, Stuff,

Today was the first time I ever paddled on a canoe. My girlfriend had some technical difficulties with her one man so we didn't get to test it out yet. Her friends were very generous and let us sample their Pegasus. All I can say now is that I want one.

Also, I won a bet with the girlfriend. She said that I would flip the boat on my first time out. Well I proved her wrong and won myself a pound of Spicy Shoyu Ahi Poke from my favorite fish market Marujyu in Pearl City. They have awesome food and poke there.

Maybe my next project for Google Android would be some sort of GPS water route tracker for paddlers. This would be much cheaper than a Garmin but that would also mean you would need a waterproof handset.

Canoe Stand

2008-03-25 @ 18:30, Stuff,

I decided to take a day off from working on Android Connect and make a canoe stand for my fiancee's OC-1 Viper. A great big “Thank You” to Tracy for the boat. The OC-1 was given as wedding present to us. The boat has been sitting on rolls of carpet for the past several weeks.

I perused OCPaddler's forum for plans but didn't find any. There were a bunch of pictures, but no How-To. I figured, why not take pictures and make a How-To. So click on continue to my Canoe Stand Project. I hope you will find it useful.

I would appreciate any comments or how to make it better. I haven't had the time to put in a comment system in this site. As you can see, it is bare right now. I just had this site hosted last month. I am building everything from scratch as a learning tool to study .Net and prepare for the MCTS exams. Anyhow, go check out the Canoe Stand Project.

Android Connect

2008-03-25 @ 01:00, .Net, Java,

Google launched its Android Challenge I last year. Android is Google's open handset platform. From my understanding of reading the rules, the contest is broken into two rounds. The 50 most promising applications are awarded $25,000 in the first round. The second round then awards $250,000 to the best 10 of the 50 applications and $100,000 the next best 10 applications. In other words, 1st through 10th get $275,000; 11th through 20th get $125,000; and 21st through 50th place get $25,000.

My friends and I have been working on our project since then. Well, mostly I have been doing the programming because our work place dropped a time bomb on us and we were sacked with loads and loads of work. My friends did most of the progamming, so they were programmed out by the end of whatever was left of the day. Then after that, we got hit with another bomb that pretty much demoralized us, but that is a different story to tell at another time.

Oh yeah, so getting back, we (more like me because of the work place situation) decided on Android Connect as the project. Details of the project can be found in the projects section or the nice little link on the right. The basic premise is to track degrees of seperation kind of thing through contact.

A better way of thinking about the application is like the movie Pay It Forward, except replace good deeds with a smile. Say you smile at someone, and brighten up their day. Now that person is happy and will smile at the next person. In essence, your smile is getting passed from person to person. The application tracks where and when your smile is passed on. Sounds cool huh.

So check out the projects page or the project itself.
